Porsche Leads Manufacturers Title Chase Going Into FIA WEC At Nürburgring (19.07.16)

Sunday July 24 sees the fourth round of the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship take place at the Nürburgring.

After an enthralling first three rounds of the 2016 season, Porsche lead the Manufacturers Championship on 127 points, 32 points ahead of Audi. Toyota, following its heartbreak at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, are third in the Manufacturers’ title chase on 70 points.

In the race for the FIA Endurance Trophy for LMP2 Teams, Signatech Alpine, with its #36 Nissan-powered Alpine A460, currently leads the standings on 87 points after its win at the French classic. The #26 G-Drive Racing ORECA 05 is second on 66 points after its pole position and second place at the Circuit de la Sarthe. Third in the Endurance Trophy for LMP2 Teams, on 56 points, is the #43 RGR Sport by Morand Ligier JS P2 after a consistent season so far in 2016.

Thiriet By TDS Racing Take Second Victory Of 2016 ELMS At Red Bull Ring (18.07.16)

After four hours of enthralling racing, the #46 Thiriet by TDS Racing Nissan-powered ORECA 05, driven by Pierre Thiriet, Mathias Beche and Ryo Hirakawa took its second victory of the 2016 season. It lead the #33 Eurasia Motorsport ORECA 05, with the driver line-up of Pu Junjin, Nico Pieter De Bruijn and Tristan Gommendy, over the line by over 51 seconds.

The #38 G-Drive Racing Gibson 015S, driven by Simon Dolan, Harry Tincknell and Giedo van der Garde, finished on the final step of the podium in what was a disappointing and frustrating race for the current Teams Classification leaders.

The #23 Panis Barthez Compétition Ligier JS P2, with TimothéBuret at the wheel, led the field from pole and was soon under pressure from the #38 G-Drive Racing Gibson 015S with Giedo van der Garde driving. The #38 car had to pit early for a slow puncture and the #33 Eurasia Motorsport ORECA consolidated its second place.

Shaitar, Basov With SMP Racing Take Second Win In 2016 Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup (17.07.16)

Aleksey Basov and Victor Shaitar, driving the #72 SMP Racing Ferrari F488, took their second victory of the 2016 Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup at the Red Bull Ring in Austria on July 16.

Second across the line was the #88 Mentos Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R with Egido Perfetti and Klaus Bachler driving. Completing the podium positions was the #34 TF Sport Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 with the driver pairing of Salih Yoluc and Euan Hankey.

The race had a dramatic start when collisions at the first corner led to the #55 FFF Racing team by ACM McLaren 650S, with Hiroshi Hamaguchi driving, being left stranded on the track with a wheel missing. The race was neutralised under the Safety Car but both the #26 Classic & Modern Racing Ferrari F458 Italia GT3 and the #55 Mclaren 650S were out of the race as a result.

When racing resumed, the #72 SMP Racing Ferrari F488 had a comfortable lead with the #88 Mentos Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R challenging the #34 TF Sport Aston Martin V12 Vantage for second place. The #88 car held second place until an error by Egido Perfetti allowed Yoluc in the #34 car back through.

After a second safety car period following an off-track excursion by the #5 FFF Racing team by ACM Lamborghini Huracán GT3, the #72 car held the lead with the #88 car regaining second place.

During pitstops and driver changes, the #34 TF Sport Aston Martin V12 Vantage, now driven by Euan Hankey, took second place back but was again caught and passed by the Mentos Porsche, now driven by Klaus Bachler.

The battle between the #34 and #88 cars continued for the remainder of the race. The #72 car looked on course for a straightforward victory until shortly before the end when Shaitar, now driving, left the track at T2. Shaitar got the car back on track but now only had a gap of less than four seconds to the chasing cars.

At the flag, Shaitar brought the #72 car home for its second victory of the season 8.103 seconds ahead of Bachler in the #88 Porsche with Hankey less than two seconds behind Bachler in the #34 car.

TF Sport’s third place sees them lead the Teams Championship on 52 points with FFF Racing by ACM second in the championship on 36 points despite two NCs at the Red Bull Ring. Mentos racing are two points behind in third place in the Teams Championship.

The Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup grid next sees track action on August 27 for the fourth round of the 2016 season at Le Castellet, France.

Chatin Puts Panis-Barthez Compétition On ELMS Pole At Red Bull Ring (16.07.16)

Paul-Loup Chatin put the #23 Nissan-powered Panis-Barthez Compétition Ligier JS P2 on pole for the 4 Hours of Red Bull Ring, completing a brace of poles for the French team in Austria.

Chatin lapped the Red Bull Ring in 1:20.700, .053 quicker than Mathias Beche in the #46 Thiriet By TDS Racing ORECFA 05 and over two seconds quicker than the pole time in 2015. Completing the top three for the July 17 race was the championship-leading #38 G-Drive racing Gibson 015S, driven by Harry Tincknell who put in a 1:20.826 on his fifth lap.

2014 European Le Mans Series champion Chatin was delighted with his first pole of the season.

Murphy Prototypes Announces Drivers For ELMS At Red Bull Ring (14.07.16)

Dublin-based Murphy Prototypes has announced that Karun Chandhok will return to the team for the 4 Hours of Red Bull Ring on July 17. He joins Seán Doyle and debut driver Guglielmo Belotti for the third round of the 2016 European Le Mans Series.

Having last driven for Murphy Prototypes at the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans, Chandhok is excited at the opportunity to get back behind the wheel of the distinctive Nissan-powered ORECA 03R.

“It’s great to be back ‘super-subbing for Murphy Prototypes this weekend,” said F1 presenter Chandhok. “I haven’t had the chance to compete in sportscars since Le Mans last year, so when Greg called to ask if I could fill in for him, I was happy to take the opportunity to race with the team again. It’s always great fun working with the guys from Murphy Prototypes.”

Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup Action Returns At Red Bull Ring For Round Three (12.07.16)

Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup action accompanies the European Le Mans Series when Round 3 of the new-for-2016 GT3 series visits the Red Bull Ring in Austria on July 17.

12 cars will take to the grid, representing eight teams from six countries.

FFF Racing team By ACM will bring its #5 Lamborghini Huracán and #55 McLaren 650S. The #5 car sees the return of Andrea Calderelli who, for this round, is joined by Taiyou Lida from Japan. The #55 McLaren 650S will be driven by the regular driver pairing of Hiroshi Hamaguchi and Adrian Quaife-Hobbs.

AF Corse return with its pair of Ferrari F458 Italia GT3s. In the #14 car Pierre-Marie De Leener will be joined by Adrien De Leener, the driver pairing from ‘Road To le Mans’. The #71 car has the driver pairing from the first two rounds; that of Mads Rasmussen and Felipe Barreiros.
