The EGT Friday Sportscar Round-Up (10.03.17)

It was a typical mid-March pre-season week for news as teams announced drivers, embarked on testing and positioned themselves for 2017.

On Sunday March 5 Jackie Chan Dc Racing in partnership with Jota Sport announced its full driver line-ups for its two-car entry into the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship.

In the #37 ORECA 07, and joining co-founder David Cheng, will be Alex Brundle and Tristan Gommendy. Alex Brundle is no stranger to the Kent-based LMP2 Le Mans-winning team as he joined it mid-way through 2016. Radio Le Mans commentator and son of former F1 pilot Martin, Brundle is delighted that he has a full season drive for 2017.

“I’m delighted to be making a full time return to the WEC with Jackie Chan DC Racing,” said Brundle. “After a hat trick of wins to conclude last season my objective this winter was to return for a full WEC campaign to build on that success.”

Tristan Gommendy has enjoyed a long career in motorsport and first raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2003. He competed in the 2016 European Le Mans Series for Eurasia Motorsport in the ORECA 05.

In the #38 car, and partnering Ho-Pin Tung, will be the young Frenchman Thomas Laurent and 2016 FIA WEC runner-up Oliver Jarvis. Jarvis will be combining his full-season seat within the FIA World Endurance Championship with his driving commitments at Bentley Motorsport in the Blancpain Endurance Series.

FALKEN announced on Monday March 6 that it will contest selected rounds of the VLN series as well as the 24 Hours Nurburgring with two cars. Joining its existing FALKEN Porscge 911 GT3 R (Type 991) will be a new arrival – its BMW M6 GT3.

The BMW M6 GT3 will be driven by Peter Dumbreck and Alexandra Imperatori whilst piloting the Porsche 911 GT3 R (Type 991) will be FALKEN driver Martin Ragginger and Porsche works drivers Jörg Bergmeister, Dirk Werner and Laurens Vanthoor.

As we count down to the season-launching Media Day for the 2017 British GT Championship, driver announcements came thick and fast.

Macmillan AMR announced its drivers for its GT4 entry with the news that William Phillips will be partnered by Danish newcomer Jan Jønck.

Jonck has made the switch this season from single-seaters after contesting part of the BRDC British F3 campaign in 2016. The 18-year-old sampled the Macmillan Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT4 at the end of last year and tested the car recently at Portimao.

“The British GT Championship is one of the most competitive series in Europe, with lots of international-standard drivers and teams,” said Jønck. “The circuits are great, too. Well-run, exciting and challenging – some of the best anywhere – and the mix of classes, with GT3 and GT4 together, makes for very competitive and very exciting racing.”

Century Motorsport will have two entries in the GT3 class in the 2017 British GT Championship for the first time. The Fenny Compton-based squad announced on March 8 that 16-year-old American Chase Parker will join long-standing Ginetta driver Charlie Robertson in the second factory-supported Ginetta G55 GT3.

“I am very excited to extend my arrangement with Ginetta,” said Chase. “2016 was an incredibly successful year in the G55 GT4. I can’t wait to be part of the 2017 season with Ginetta in the GT3 car. This will be another exciting year. I really appreciate all of Ginetta’s support.”

In an exciting media development on March 9, the British GT Championship announced that Front Runner, the UK’s only free-to-air sports channel who recently announced coverage of the 24H SERIES, will be airing the UK rounds of the 2017 championship live.

“This is fantastic news for British GT and MINI Challenge, their drivers and teams, who, together with Front Runner, now have a platform capable of reaching millions of new and existing fans,” said British GT Championship Manager Benjamin Franassovici.

Looking forward to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Clearwater Racing, who was awarded two entries into the 2017 French classic, has announced its drivers for its second entry. Richard Wee will be joined Alvaro Parente and Hiroki Katoh in piloting the team’s Ferrari 488 GTE.

Wee, Parente and Katoh will join the team’s first entry which will be driven by Weng Sun Mok, matt Griffin and Keita Sawa.

British GT Championship Announces Live TV Coverage By Front Runner From UK Circuits In 2017 (09.03.17)

The British GT Championship has announced live coverage of the UK rounds of the 2017 season by Front Runner, the UK’s only free-to-air sports channel.

Coverage will start from the opening rounds at Oulton Park on April 17. Live coverage will also be offered from Rockingham and Snetterton before the championship’s blue riband event, the Silverstone 500, a three-hour race, on June 11.

Although coverage from Spa-Francorchamps is not part of the Front Runner deal, the two final rounds of the season, from Brands Hatch and Donington, will be shown live.

British GT Championship Manager Benjamin Franassovici is delighted that, for the first time in the 25-year history of the UK’s premier GT series, live coverage is being offered for all UK rounds.

“This is fantastic news for British GT and MINI challenge, their drivers and teams, who, together with Front Runner, now have a platform capable of reaching millions of new and existing fans,” said Franassovici. “It’s really exciting to be bucking the trend of motor racing, and sport in general, by offering live free-to-air coverage throughout our 25th anniversary season.”

Front Runner’s Ryan Scarratt said: “We’re delighted to be broadcasting live British GT and MINI Challenge coverage on Front Runner. I’m sure motorsport fans everywhere will be tuning in to watch all the action as it happens this season.”

Parker Chase and Charlie Robertson To Join Century Motorsport for 2017 British GT GT3 Campaign (08.03.17)

Fenny Compton-based Century Motorsport has announced that Charlie Robertson and New Braunsfel, Texas-based Parker Chase will be sharing the driving duties in its second Ginetta G55 GT3 entry in the 2017 British GT Championship.

Chase already has one years’ experience in the GT4 version of the Ginetta G55, having raced in the 2016 Pirelli World Challenge for Performance Motorsport Group and finishing fourth in the drivers standings.

Chase is delighted at the opportunities that the Century Motorsport campaign offers.

Robertson has extensive experience of Ginetta, having won the 2012 Ginetta Junior title and the 2014 Ginetta GT4 Supercup. Robertson further extended his relationship with the Garforth-based constructor when he won the 2015 European Le Mans Series LMP3 class alongside Sir Chris Hoy. As a development driver for Ginetta, Robertson has also been responsible for much of the GT3 car’s winter testing programme.

“I’m very excited to be racing with Century Motorsport, partnering Parker Chase in British GT,” said Robertson. “It will be a new challenge for both of us, and my first full season in GT3.”

Century Motorsport Team Principal Clive Freke said: “2017 is set to be a very significant year for Century Motorsport where we hope to try and stick to what we do best, but push the boundaries by investing in British GT, but this time entering two cars into GT3 for the first time.”

The 2017 British GT Championship gets underway at Oulton Park on April 15 – 17.

Jan Jønck Joins Macmillan AMR GT4 Line-Up For 2017 British GT Championship (08.03.17)

18-year-old Danish driver Jan Jønck has joined Macmillan AMR to partner Williams Phillips in the team’s Aston Martin Vantage V8 GT4.

The young Dane began his driving career in karts in 2011 and raced in two rounds of the Formula 4 Italy Championship in 2014. In 2016, he contested the BRDC Formula 3 Championship with Sean Walkinshaw Racing, finishing 16th in the standings.

“Britain has always been a mecca for motorsport and I’m very excited to be developing my career in the UK,” said Jønck. “It’s a great place to race.”

Manor Racing’s Gemma Hatton Joins Student Motorsport As Contributor (06.03.17)

Student Motorsport (www.studentmotorsport.com), the first online motorsport community for young people, students, graduates, educators, institutions, professionals and organisations, has announced that Gemma Hatton, who, until recently, worked as Manor Racing’s Tyre and Strategy Engineer has joined as a contributor.

Gemma Hatton graduated from the University of Bath in 2014 with a Batchelor of Engineering degree and completed an MSc in Advanced Motorsport Engineering from Cranfield in 2015.

Prior to her role at Manor Racing, Gemma worked as a technical writer for Racecar Engineering magazine, as Data Engineer for Support Our Paras Racing and as Formula 1 Trackside Engineer for Pirelli.

Jackie Chan DC Racing / Jota Sport Announces Drivers For 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship. (06.03.17)

Following the announcement in early February that Jackie Chan DC Racing was joining forces with Kent-based Jota Sport for a two-car assault on the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship, the driver line-ups for the two entries has now been revealed.

In the #37 ORECA 07 LMP2 entry, and driving alongside team co-founder David Cheng will be Alex Brundle and Tristan Gommendy.

In the #38 entry Briton Oliver Jarvis and 18-year-old Frenchman Thomas Laurent will be joining David Cheng’s compatriot, Ho-Pin Tung.
