Student Motorsport Racing has announced that Ben Wallace will drive for the team as part of its two-car assault on the 2020 Clio Cup UK championship.
The team, the racing arm of Student Motorsport, a non-profit membership organisation with a clear mission to develop a student’s ability to access a career in the ultra-competitive motorsport and automotive industry, announced its intention to enter the 2020 Clio Cup UK championship in December 2019.
Student Motorsport was founded by John Paul ‘JP’ Latham in 2014. JP Latham will be managing the new Clio Cup race team.
In a series of firsts, Student Motorsport was, at Autosport International in January, the first team to display the new-for-2020 Clio Cup car. It is now the first team to declare a driver for the new season.
After a successful karting career, Ben Wallace competed in Ginetta Juniors and the VW VAG Trophy before graduating to the British GT Championship in 2018 in a Ginetta G55 GT4.
Ben Wallace is looking forward to the new season.
“The new Clio Cup is a really exciting looking championship for UK Motorsport and I was immediately interested when it was first announced, especially as it is on the SRO British GT package,” said Ben Wallace.
“I’ve worked with JP Latham before and he was also very keen to do it so the deal came about very quickly. The costs are right, the format is right and the car is so well thought through, it’s going to appeal to drivers of all ages and abilities.”
John Paul Latham is also excited by the challenges of competing in the 2020 Clio Cup UK championship and the opportunities it brings to offer valuable work experience to students, graduates and young people at the start of their motorsport careers.
“We’re thrilled to have Ben on board,” said JP Latham. “Aside from the focus on winning races, we can utilise his experience to help out other drivers and, with our team personnel, inspire the next generation of motorsport professionals.”
The 2020 Clio Cup UK championship gets underway at Snetterton on May 17 -18.
