Cheshire-based WPI Motorsport, with which Michael Igoe finished third in the 2020 Intelligent Money British GT Championship GT3 Pro-Am drivers standings, has announced that Lamborghini factory driver Phil Keen will join the team for the 2021 season.
Keen will join Igoe in a GT3 Pro-Am partnership after six years driving with Barwell Motorsport. The Berkshire-based 37-year-old pilot has finished runner-up on three occasions with teammate Jon Minshaw and concluded the compacted 2020 season in third place alongside Adam Balon.
Michael Igoe raced with some of the world’s best Lamborghini drivers in 2020 and took his first Intelligent Money British GT Championship victory with Andrea Caldarelli at a rain-soaked Donington Park in August.
Michael Igoe is looking forward to the 2021 season.
“The funny thing us, we’ve driven with all the factory drivers and chosen the one we’ve never driven with,” said Igoe in an interview with Autosport. “It’s a big testament to us being such a new team. But I think we’ve made a good impression in the championship and considering the inconsistency of having different drivers this year, I think we’ve still delivered well as a team. It’s very exciting times ahead.”
Phil Keen understands that he and Igoe will need to form a competitive bond before the pairing can compete for title honours.
“I know it’s not going to be a five-minute process and I’m sure next year will be a learning year for us all to get everything right, but we’re still looking to win the championship,” said Keen.
“Having Andrea (Caldarelli with them in 2020) means things will have been ironed out. It’s going to be good fun I think and Michael wants to do well for sure. Foremost, it’s a hobby for him, he wants to enjoy his racing and the people he spends his time with. So I think that’s an important part of it as well moving forward.”
The opening round of the 2021 Intelligent Money British GT Championship takes place at Oulton Park on April 3 – 5.
