Cheshire-based WPI Motorsport has announced that it will return to the Intelligent Money British GT Championship with the unchanged driver line-up of Michael Igoe and Phil Keen.
Igoe and Keen joined forces for the first time in 2020 and finished 4th in the GT3 drivers standings. The duo drove the #18 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo to four podiums which included victories at the opening round at Brands Hatch as well as at Oulton Park.
Lamborghini factory driver Phil Keen has yet to win the British GT Championship, despite heading into the final round as title contender on six occasions.
“It’s about time we changed that statistic, don’t you think?!” said Keen. “There were occasions this year, like Brands Hatch, where we had the measure of everyone, but others – and especially during the mid-season-slump with the mystery handling issue – when we were nowhere.
“It was a real Jekyll and Hyde campaign that proved consistency wins British GT titles rather than occasional strong showings. Still, the team definitely took a step forwards compared with 2019 and ’20. Now we have to find those extra percentage points that make the difference come the season’s end.”
Michael Igoe is looking forward to building on the progress he made throughout 2019 and ‘20
‘Phil’s one of the fastest guys out there but he also understands championships are usually won and lost by the amateur, whoever they’re racing for,” said Michael Igoe. “I learnt a lot and improved as a driver thanks to having some consistency, as well as a driver of his calibre, on the other side of the garage throughout this year.
“OK, we didn’t win the title but just being in contention at Donington after the issues we had earlier in the season was an achievement in itself. It was a no-brainer to continue together and build on everything we’ve learnt throughout 2021”
The 2022 Intelligent Money British GT Championship gets underway at Oulton Park on April 16 – 18.
