Doncaster-born Aaron Mason is joining the RCIB Insurance Racing for the third round of the 2016 British GT Championship. Mason replaces Wilson Thompson who has departed the team after only two rounds. He will partner Rob Barrable in the #75 Ginetta G55 GT4
Mason has an extensive motorsport CV having won the Volkswagen Racing Cup Great Britain in both 2013 and 2015. He also has experience in the Creventic 24 Hour Series and the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.
Mason will drive the #75 Ginetta G55 GT4 for the first time in a test at Brands Hatch on May 24.
Mason has close ties with Team HARD owner Tony Gilham and this has led to the opportunity to step into the British GT Championship in the third round.
“I know Tony well from the VW Racing Cup and he often lets me know about any opportunities that might be available, but this was a question of right place, right time,” said Mason. “Fortunately there are no clashing commitments so I can really focus on my British GT programme.”
“Racing on the same bill as British GT with the VWs means that I’ve always kept an eye on the GT4 times,” continued Mason. “There’s not a huge difference, but having no experience of rear wheel-drive or the Ginetta, as well as going up against a good field, obviously means we’ll have our work cut out.”
“I also know what a good driver Rob is, having raced against him in VWs, so I think we’ll be looking for a couple of solid results at Oulton.”
The third and fourth rounds of the 2016 British GT Championship take place at Oulton Park on May 30.
